The difference between steel strand and wire rope

In simple terms, each steel wire that makes up the steel strand is much thicker than the thin steel wire that makes up the wire rope.

In terms of performance, the steel strand has high strength, small deformation, and poor toughness; the steel wire rope has good toughness and large deformation

2. To put it simply, the steel strand is used in situations where there is simple tension and double-end anchoring. In fact, it is equivalent to twisting several small-diameter steel bars together and using them as large-diameter steel bars. The steel wire rope is used in a very complex transmission system. In addition to bearing all the tension, it also needs to change the direction of the tension through pulleys, etc. The steel wire rope itself has to withstand huge bending, torsion and extrusion forces, so the structure is completely different from the steel strand. Usually the steel wire is very thin, there will be a rope core, etc. High-grade steel wire ropes are very precise to ensure performance and provide maximum safety. Of course, there are also many shoddy steel wire ropes. If you are not careful, it will cause huge economic losses and personal injuries.

3. Both steel wire rope and steel strand are made of twisted steel wire, but they are two completely different products. Their uses and performance indicators are different. They shall comply with the corresponding national standards or industry standards.

Steel wire rope is mainly used for flexible accessories of cranes. The higher the fatigue resistance, the better, that is, the longer the fatigue life, the better. The lay length of steel wire rope is generally less than 7 times to ensure the bending fatigue life of steel wire rope. The structure of steel wire rope is very complex, such as 6*36WS structure, 36*7 and dozens of other structures. The main varieties are galvanized steel wire rope, stainless steel wire rope, smooth steel wire rope, phosphate coated steel wire rope and plastic coated steel wire rope. Among them, phosphate coated steel wire rope has the best fatigue resistance and is an upgraded product of smooth steel wire rope, especially manganese phosphate film, which greatly improves the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of steel wire surface, effectively prevents micro-motion fatigue and greatly improves service life.
